Did the New York Times Really Snub Whoopi?

The New York Times recently ran an article about the dearth of black Oscar contenders among this year's nominees. In so doing, they mentioned many previous Oscar winners, but not Whoopi Goldberg who won Best Supporting Actress in 1990. Goldberg was upset about this and took it to The View, where she presented her Oscar to audience applause, nursed her wounds in front of a national audience and basked in her co-hosts sympathies while issuing the following remarks:

"I'm embarrassed to tell you, it hurt me terribly. When you win an Academy Award, that's part of what you've done, your legacy. I will always be Academy Award winner Whoopi Goldberg. And to be dismissed and erased by the New York Times film critics...it's sloppy journalism."

The Times response, Goldberg fires back and my take on the whole thing after the jump!

Will Ferrell, Tom Cruise and Denzel Washington Make Forbes List of Most Overpaid Actors

Will Ferrell is the most overpaid actor in Hollywood, according to Forbes. The Book of Eli, Denzel Washington in a Completely Different Role

Based approximately 30 years in the future, The Book of Eli envisions a world destroyed by a holy war. As a result, humans rid the world of all evidence of God, including each of the holy books. Only one is left in the possession of an anointed guardian played by Denzel Washington. That book is called The Book of Eli and Carnegie (Gary Oldman), the leader of a small surviving community, is desperately looking for it. His goal: to use the holy words to manipulate his followers. Eli must pass through the evil man’s territory in his journey to the west coast, a task he was assigned to by God, at least so he says.

In The Book of Eli, the Hughes brothers manage to mix the practical with the spiritual to make the film puzzling and yet strangely challenging. There’s a clever combination of gritty apocalypse and hope for a bright future in the film, but more: the sense that something great must be involved. READ MORE

The trailer looks good, the story looks awesome and The Book of Eli has Denzel Washington. What else does a film need? Based in a bleak tortured land, sometime in the future, Denzel must save the world. I'm thoroughly excited and cannot wait. The Book of Eli could be the first must see movie of the year.
