Summer Box Office 2009 Set Records


Variety is reporting that 2009 has already become the highest-grossing summer ever at the domestic box office. So far, the box office revenues are $4.17 billion, compared to $4.16 billion for summer 2007, the previous record holder. This Labor Day weekend should add another $100 million or more to the total tally, meaning thi summer would be up at least 3% in grosses over 2007.

What Was The Best Movie From The Summer 2009?

Well the summer movie season of 2009 is now officially done. There were some great hits (Star Trek) and quite a few misses (Year One) this season that begins officially May 1 and runs to August 31. I generally don't count those films that are realeased in March or April because they are still technically part of the spring film season (eg. Watchmen). This leads to my big question of the day:

Seldom has a film I didn’t really like ever produced a sequel I really enjoy. One of those few exceptions was Ice Age 2: The Meltdown. I really liked the second film and not the first. The new film: Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs doesn’t quite follow the trend. The premise: a lost world under the ice where dinosaurs survive against all odds, seemed patently designed to fail. I hate to be wrong, and it seems…I’m not. The film was not a complete dog and a lot of it was fun (mostly our favorite squirrel) but it just did not succeed. READ MORE
