District 9

Summer Lovin' Had Me a Blast

I was just checking out the USA Today movie news and found myself in complete disagreement. Today's "Summer Movie Report Card" and it's conclusion that the "Season starts fast, then slips" is wrong. In truth, this has been one of the best seasons in years. With Hollywood actually slipping and fewer movies coming to wide release, the summer of '09 turned out to be a steady delight.  READ MORE

What Was The Best Movie From The Summer 2009?

Well the summer movie season of 2009 is now officially done. There were some great hits (Star Trek) and quite a few misses (Year One) this season that begins officially May 1 and runs to August 31. I generally don't count those films that are realeased in March or April because they are still technically part of the spring film season (eg. Watchmen). This leads to my big question of the day:

What Was Your Favorite Film From The Summer Of 2009?

The Movie Maniac’s Picks and Pans for the Weekend: District 9

The buzz is picking up on this one: District 9 could be the surprise event for the summer. Peter Jackson is no stranger to success and he has his hands all over this one. Neill Blomkamp, his pick to direct District 9, had originally been slated for Halo (the popular video game to movie adaptation) until that effort stalled. District 9 could be bigger, much bigger.

Based on an original film by Blomkamp, the story is about visitors from space, drones trapped on a space ship with no leaders (think Alien Nation meets Cry Freedom). The idea is fresh, thrilling, almost original and something seldom seen in the safe world of sequel Hollywood. See this the first weekend as I predict the lines will grow.

Here is another new trailer for District 9...this time it is revealing way more about why the aliens are here and why they can't leave.

District 9 Goes Online

The new Peter Jackson-produced District 9 has now gone online with it's own Official Website
The website references clues into the plot details of this much anticipated Sci-Fi movie. From what we know the alien visitors are being kept in a restricted area in the slums of Johannesburg, South Africa where they first landed but have also have been forced into slave labor. A government group called Multi-National United (MNU) is keen on exploiting the alien's technology, engineering and biology. A resistance group has been organized to shed light on the lies MNU is feeding the public.

Disctrict 9 arrives in theaters August 14, 2009.
