Box Office
December 14, 2009 - 9:13pm
Avatar is coming out this weekend and currently its predicted to open at $91M for the opening weekend.
What do you guys think can it make around $91M? or will it make more? less?
I am predicting that it will make around $80M and then it will continue to make a lot over the long break.

Well I was almost right.
I predicted that Avatar would make $80M opening weekend and it made $77M. Since then it has gone on to make $135M more and is currently at $212M domestically. The world wide gross for Avatar in only 10 days is already $615M.
The second weekend drop for Avatar was only 2.6%. The normal second weekend drop for a block buster is from 30-50%. I think that Avatar will continue to make a ton of money over the next few months and it will eventually beat Harry Potter 6 which currently holds the record for box office 2009 which made $929M worldwide.
If any movie ever was going to beat Titanic.....this is it. I saw it today and am most likely giong to watch it again very soon.
"Businesses are booming" - Inglorious Basters
What a huge weekend! The top 10 movies this weekend made a combined total of $278M which broke the previous record set back in July 2008 which was $253.
December 25 - 27
1. Avatar $75M / $212M
2. Sherlock Homes $65 / $65M
3. Alvin and the Chimunks 2 $50M / $77M
4. It's Complicated $22M / $22M
5. Up in the Air $11M / $24M
Wow what a huge weekend. So many records broken in such a little time.
Top 5.....for January 1-3, 2010
1. Avatar $68M / $352M / $1018B
2. Sherlock Holmes $38M / $140M / $229M
3. Alvin and the Chipmunks $36M / $157M / $256M
4. It's Complicated $18M / $59M
5. The Blind Side $12M / $209M
Avatar's Total Worldwide Gross in only 17 days......$1,018 Billion
In only 17 days Avatar is now the 4th highest grossing movie of all time before inflation.
It will be interesting to see how much more money it will make once the holidays are over.
Just when I thought that people would start slowing down going to the theaters it is the year that the box office finally broke the $10Billion mark domestically and went up 9.9% compared to last year.
As of January 6th, Avatar surpassed Pirates of the Caribbean Dead Man's Chest and now stands as the #3 movie of all time at $1,098B. The #2 film is LOTR Return of the King which is at $1,119B and Avatar should pass it later on this week which will make Titanic #1 and Avatar #2. A huge achievement by James Cameron.
As of January 7th, Avatar has surpassed Lord of the Rings The Return of the King for the #2 spot on the world wide box office and is now only 2nd to James Cameron's Titanic.
Remember, and if someone could check this out it would be great, Avatar gets all that extra revenue from 3D and Imax. I figure that pumps up the numbers.
Craig
Avatar's IMAX gross is $66.4M.
I cannot locate its 3D sales.
Its official Avatar is the king of the world.
As of 1/28/2010 it is at $1.9Billion.
Another week and a few more records broken by Avatar.
This week Avatar crossed the $2B mark and is now at $2.03Billion. It also has the highest grossing 7th weekend at $30M beating Titanic by more than $4M. By Wednesday of this week Avatar should surpass $600M domestic passing Titanic for the number one spot in the US.
