I was just about to post my list on the QT thread, lol! Well Lost, I think first I'll copy and paste my comments about your list on here...
It's going to be hard to come up with my Top 25 of all time!
I like a lot of the movies you chose Lost - especially Goodfellas, 12 Angry Men, Fight Club, Pulp Fiction, Amelie. I bought Hot Fuzz awhile ago but I still haven't watched it yet. HATED Saving Private Ryan with a passion though, lol.
Okay, I'll think about my list. For me, it'll be interesting to see if I have any movies after 1980 on my list, lol.
Okay, here's my list of Top 25. Keep in mind, this is just a list of my favorite films. This isn't a list of like Greatest Films in All of Cinematic History or anything like that, lol.
In alphabetical order (because it was too hard to number them):
…And Justice For All
All About Eve
Citizen Kane
A Clockwork Orange
Do the Right Thing
Dr. Strangelove
Double Indemnity
Dressed to Kill (1980)
Jaws
King of Comedy
The Maltese Falcon
Manhattan
Monty Python and the Holy Grail
Muriel’s Wedding
The Producers
Pulp Fiction
Ran (Kurosawa)
Rocky
Rosemary’s Baby
A Shot in the Dark (second Pink Panther movie)
The Thin Blue Line
This is Spinal Tap
Tootsie
Touch of Evil
West Side Story
Daisy
Out of you entire ist I've only seen Jaws, Pup Fiction, and Rocky. If I had to watch one from you list which movie would choose? I'll add it to my netflix queue.
Muriel YOU TERRIBLE MURIEL!! LMAO
Lost I have seen about 2/3 of Daisy's list and I am sure she will have a different opinion but for me, you have to see West Side Story because when your a jet, your a jet all the way. You also have to see Citizen Kane, All about Eve and Rosemary's baby.
I hated Clockwork, but then again for the most part I LOATHE stanley kubrick movies.
Lost, picking just one is soooo hard since they're all my favorites, lol. I'll say a few and you can read the descriptions on netflix or watch the trailers and see which one appeals to you the most. I know you're not into classics, so I won't recommend the oldest ones to you (though if you do like musicals, then West Side Story may be the one to check out.)
Of the most recent ones on my list:
Tootsie is a lot of fun, and I don't know of anyone that dislikes that movie.
Trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FlXE1Yq0AnQ
Do the Right Thing might appeal to you. It's technically (visuals, sound, writing) brilliant and the story is thought provoking.
Trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=muc7xqdHudI
Dr. Strangelove: like EET, a lot of people don't like Stanley Kubrik films, but Dr. Strangelove imo seems to be the one most people like. And Peter Sellers gives 3 brilliant performances. George C Scott is Hilarious!
Trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G4_qEbuNBls
Dressed To Kill: a thriller. Brian De Palma borrows a lot from Hitchcock but gives his movies a modern twist...they're kind of sleazy but still fun. This one was controversial when it came out.
Trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VxG57Uf7iMU
Monty Python and the Holy Grail. If you like silly, absurd humor this is a must. Cult following.
(DVD) Trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RDM75-oXGmQ
Lost, I'm gonna pick out 5 or 6 of your movies that I haven't seen and you can tell me which of those you recommend the most... this should be fun!
EET and Daisy
Thank you so much. I will definetly check out one or more of those movies sometime in the upcoming week.
Daisy I look forward to the few you pick so I can let you know which is the best.
Lost - just fyi I have actually seen all of the movies on your list with the exception of hot fuzz
I have watched most of both of those lists.
I have never seen Hot Fuzz, Dr. Strangelove, the thin blue line, or Fight Club.
I liked most of them. I really hated Lord of the Rings. Sorry!!
EET and GHvetfan: So...what are your favorite movies??
Lost, of the movies you listed I haven't seen: The Departed, V for Vendetta, Lord of the Rings, Slumdog Millionaire, Dark Knight, Mystic River, Curious Case of BB, Prestige, Inglorious Bastards, Batman Begins, Heat, Hot Fuzz, Finding Nemo, Incredibles.
I've already got Hot Fuzz, that'll be easy to see. So which ones do you think I should start with? I should say though...I can't stand Natalie Portman so I don't know about "V"... And I'm not sure about Lord of the Rings. I don't know that I want to see a movie about little trolls running around in a forest...
The little trolls running around the forest were super annoying and so boring that I fell asleep the first two times I tried to watch the first one. My boyfriend was getting really mad cause he thinks LOTR is the best thing since beer.
Of the movies you guys listed -----I would say The departed is a favorite. I will have to think on the rest. I have trouble making lists because I keep thinking of another film and another and my list ends up way too long.
Boy, I'm going to have to do some hard thinking on a Top 25 or Top 100 list...
Daisy, I have to say I am sort of shocked at some of the movies on Lost's list that you havent seen.
I dont know that I can come up with a list but I know that any list I would come up with would include the Godfather I and II, Jaws, and Gone With the Wind.
Other movies that might make the list...
Alien (first movie I ever saw so that would be sentimental reasons) Moulin Rouge, Citizen Kane, Schindlers List, Cinema Paridiso, Osama, The Lord of the Rings, Brotherhood of the Wolf, The Wizard of Oz, It's A Wonderful Life, Resevoir Dogs, The Usual Suspects, Swingers, Back to the Future, Blade Runner, ET, Dances with Wolves, the English Patient, Eight Men Out, Rocky, Gaslight, In the Heat of the Night, Diehard, Lust Caution, Rear Window, To Catch a Thief, The Accused, Wait Until Dark, Hamlet (The Kenneth Brannagh version), A Few Good Men, West Side Story, 12 Angry Men, Braveheart, Bridge on the River Kwai, Spartacus, Titanic, The Last Emperor, The Lion King, House of the Flying Daggers, Back to the Future, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, Star Wars, King Kong - the original version, West Side Story, Silence of the Lambs, and Raiders of the Lost Ark.
I know there are a few I probably left out, but that would probably be the list I would work from to come up with 25.
EET: LOVE Cinema Paradiso, Resevoir Dogs, Gaslight (Charles Boyer was soooo good!), In the Heat of the Night, Rear Window, Wait Until Dark (which as I saw as a kid because, believe it or not I had a huge crush on Richard Crenna, lol!), Bridge on the River Kwai, and King Kong. I also really love Spartacus - and see, you like that Stanley Kubrick movie!
As for me not seeing a lot of Lost's movies. It takes a lot for me to see recent flicks. If it gets mixed reviews or if it stars someone I don't like, then I'm probably not going to watch it. Or I might just want to be in a certain mood to watch a movie (like Mystic River.)
Wow Daisy
You and I are the complete opposites. I haven't seen any movies before 1980 and it appears that you haven't watched many movies after 1980.
I would like to say Fight Club just because its my favorite film of all time but since you already have Hot Fuzz I would just start with that. If you like spoof movies you will love it and if you don't like spoof movies you will still like it because I can't stand spoof movies and its my favorite comedy of all time. Hot Fuzz basically makes fun of movies like Bad Boys 2 and Point Break but it has a story of its own unlike other spoof movies.
I actually tried to do this same thing with a friend of mine and it didn't work out. We came up with a deal that we would take turns picking what we watch in theaters. I picked Inglorious Basterds and he picked Halloween 2 (I walked out 20 minutes into it). Then I picked The Informant and then he picked Gamer (I also had to walk out on this and went to see Hangover again). Urrrrh. I got screwed bad on that deal.
Lost, we might not be complete opposites because I'm sure I would HATE Halloween 2. I saw the trailer for it and I laughed my butt off and was like "What is that MESS??!" lol. If it's on cable one night and there's nothing else on, I might watch it, but I'm sure I won't like it.
I love Tarantino movies, but I didn't see Inglorious Bastards just because I'm not into war movies, and I'm not crazy about Brad Pitt. Though I did like Fight Club. Okay, I'll start with Hot Fuzz. I'll watch it this week and I'll let you know what I think.
You guys might have guessed but I've seen every movie on both lists at least once though I'm hazy on Touch of Evil (have to watch that one again I guess). Great list Daisy only you have the opposite problem. there are at least two great movies ever 10 years of the last thirty, lol.
Have you seen LA Confidential which might belong on either list...
My favorite films would include:
Patton of course,
Some Like it Hot,
The Court Jester
Star Wars
The Lord of the Rings (Trilogy)
The Wizard of Oz
And many others...I have deliberately seen, I think all but one of AFI's top 100s and that's cause I dont know where to find it. If you really need a list to choose from go to the lists of movies they chose from.
On my grave stone it will read "LA Confidential should have beat Titanic for Best Picture".
Yes I did like Spartacus (I'm SPARTACUS!!) and yes that is a kubrick film, but its not a strange kubrick film LOL. I also really liked Full Metal Jacket and of course the Shining. Just keep me away from 2001 Space Odyssey. I just find that with a lot of his films I get to the end and I sort of feel shell shocked -- like huh?? thats the end?? I want the last two hours of my life back LOL.
I havent seen Patton - Its one of those on my list that I keep meaning to see. That and Lawrence of Arabia.
I hate spoof movies, so I probably would not like Hot Fuzz, but I loved loved loved Fight Club. I love movies with a great twist at the end, and ones that I dont even really see coming just make me crazy with joy
LA Confidential should NOT have been Titanic for Best Picture. Because Titanic was awesome, but also because I won about 50 bucks that year on the office oscars pool.
I really liked LA Confidential a lot. It would be in my Top 100 for sure. Though I don't feel as passionately about it as Season does, lol. Oh and I've never seen Titanic and have no interest in ever seeing it. I would probably like it, but eh...
On the old forums we had an AFI thread (Lost started it, I believe) and a few of us rated the movies that we'd seen and were going to try and make our way through the rest of the list. I wish I'd kept my list/ratings
Of the movies you listed Craig, I loved Wizard of Oz & Star Wars.
EET: I haven't seen Patton either, but I don't have a strong urge to see it (even though I like George C Scott and Karl Malden). I've wanted to see Lawrence of Arabia for a long time, but never got around to it. I think The Shining is really scary, but it's not one of my favorite Kubrick films. It might make it into my Top 100.
More recent films would make it into my Top 100 (Goodfellas, Glengarry Glen Ross, Resevoir Dogs), but I have a feeling there'd still be a lot of films that are 25+ years old, lol.
Glengary Glen Ross one of the WORST movies I have ever seen.
Sorry.
I want the f%%% leads. I you do not f&&&&ing get me the F&&&&&&ing leads I swear I am going to F&&& you up. Give me the *I&*&*&*&*&*&* leads.
That was the whole movie, over and over and over again. Even Jack Lemmon couldnt save it.
LOL!! Yes, there was a lot of cursing, the characters were repugnant, and I loved Every Minute of It!!! The cast was fabulous and I liked how downbeat it was. I loved it so much, I read the play too. As I recall, it follows the play closely, but I think Ricky Roma (Al Pacino in the film, Joe Montegna in the play) was even more of a jerk in the play. And I'm pretty sure Alec Baldwin's bit wasn't in the play.
Daisy from Lost's list, I would recommend The Departed, The Dark Knight, Mystic River and the Shawshank Redemption. I'm not sure if they would be the type of movies you would like, but these four are favorites of mine.
I don't know if I can come up with 25 right now, but some of my favorites are: The Godfather I & II, 12 Angry Men, Rear Window, Citizen Kane, Forrest Gump, To Kill a Mockingbird (also one of my favorite books), Singin' In The Rain, Gone With the Wind, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, The Graduate, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Children of Men, Crash, Bonnie and Clyde and Little Miss Sunshine.
Lost, I watched Hot Fuzz and loved it!! It was hilarious and so much fun! I just put Shaun of the Dead in my netflix que, I hope that's as good
GossipGirl: I really liked Shawshank Redemption. I'm thinking I might try Mystic River next, though I'm sure I have to be in the mood for a good cry. Of the movies you picked I haven't seen Children of Men, Crash or Little Miss Sunshine. I might try Children of Men, I've heard really great things about it.
Daisy
I am so glad you liked Hot Fuzz. IMO its the best comedy of all time. I loved Shaun of the Dead but its not as great as Hot Fuzz. I think if Hot Fuzz is a 5/5 then Shaun is like a 4.5/5.
Mystic River is fantastic. I think that if it came out in 2002 or 2004 it would have probably won best picture....unfortunately it came out in 2003 the same year LOTR3 came out and it took home like 11 oscars.
Crash is also fantastic. There is one scene in Crash (you'll know when you watch it) when no matter what you will go OMG and your jaw will be on the floor.
Just a little heads up Children of Men, although great is very depressing.
For what its worth, I loved Children of Men as well. The book was also fantastic.
Daisy....
I tried my best to watch Tootsie but could not finish it. I'm sorry. I know you watched Hot Fuzz and I really wanted to watch Tootsie but its not my type of movie. If there is a movie you can think of that you liked that has come out in the past 10 years I will definetly watch it.
It's okay Lost, lol I'll try and think of a more recent movie to recommend to you
