It's hard for me to just pick one of his movies as my favorite because I love so many of them, but if I had to choose it would be Rear Window. I remember watching this in my high school film class and I just fell in love with it. It's of course a Hitchcock movie and I'm a big fan of his work as well. Other Jimmy Stewart movies I like are Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, It's a Wonderful Life, Harvey, Vertigo, The Philadelphia Story (also a Cary Grant movie) and The Man Who Knew Too Much.

The Rear Window is my favorite of his.  Also Fivel Goes West.  He did a voice in that movie. I loved that movie when I was a kid.

Vertigo was cool but the way they did Kim Novak's hair and eyebrows in that movie freaked me out. She always looked so spooky.

You Can't Take it With You is probably my favorite Jimmy Stewart movie. It was also one of the first I'd watched of his films.

Luke--if you haven't seen Shop Around the Corner--I definately recommend it.  Jimmy S costars with Margaret Sullivan and Frank Morgan (the wizard from The Wixard of Oz)  It's directed by the great Ernst Lubitsch. You've Got Mail is a remake of this movie. It's cool to see how basically the same story is done in two different eras. A scene or two are almost verbatim. Very sweet movie--wonderfully acted too. They show it on TCM quite often. I would be surprised if they don't show it this holiday season

Another good one is Shop Worn Angel also with Margaret Sullivan. Not as good as the above movie (and they are not alike despite the titles)--but it's definately worth a watch.

Bell Book and Candle is also a good movie--costars--Kim Novak and Jack Lemmon.

Jimmy S made a lot of westerns, I don't really like westerns, so I can't make recommendations in that genre. Hopefully, someone else on the forum can.

I have been a life long soap watcher. But, when TCM came on my cable network around 1993, I was so mesmerized with the classic movies that I stopped watching soaps altogether for a few years. Instead of taping my soaps when I was at work--I would tape the movies. I thought TCM would never show them over again. LOL!!

Since that time--I have read books on many of the movie stars, directors and moguls from that era. Some of the moguls make Frons etc look like Mary Poppins. LOL They were real SOBs for sure!

You never mentioned Harvey, one of his best and almost out of character for him as the borderline psychotic seeming Elwyn P. Dowd whose best friend is a 6 foot invisible rabbit, but Shenandoah and How the West Was Won are also good. Stewart's best movie is almost undoubtedly Mr. Smith Goes to Washington.

I just watched it again a couple of months ago and loved it all over again. It's topical, gritty and very much an All-American film. See it at your own risk; it may make you rethink Washington D.C.

ooh, Craig might kill me. I actually didn't like Mr. Smith Goes to Washington. I was fully expecting to love it, but was disappointed. Jimmy Stewart gave a good performance though.

My fave is probably The Philadelphia Story (also picked that for Kate H. and Cary G, lol)  I also loved Rear Window.

Since I've only seen three I would have to go with Its a Wonderful Life.  I actually just saw it last year for the first time and loved it.  Its one of the like three black and white films I've ever seen.

Craig: I await the ninjas arrival, lol. And this should really shock and appall you: While I dislike Mr Smith, I actually HATED High Noon. I saw it several years ago, assumed I would love it, but oh no...

Lost: One of 3 black & white films you've ever seen?? Or one of 3 black and white films you liked?

EDIT: Lost, I watched your Top 100 youtube video. Cool Idea! You had a lot of great movies on there.

If you haven't seen them yet, I realize its been a while since this post started, but I would recommend Shop Around the Corner and Harvey. These two films made me a life long fan of Jimmy Stewart. My favorite of his is Harvey.
