Gloria Steinem Goes After NBC's 'Playboy' Soap

Feminist icon Gloria Steinem is not looking forward to NBC's splashy, period soap The Playboy Club. The women's liberation pioneer, who wrote a scathing exposé on the real Playboy Club after going undercover as a Bunny during the 1960's, told Reuters she doesn't feel the upcoming, glamorized version, starring Eddie Cibrian, will present an accurate picture of how women were treated at the club.
"Clearly 'The Playboy Club' is not going to be accurate. It was the tackiest place on earth. It was not glamorous at all," Steinem told Reuters in an interview.
I dunno how I feel about all the bru ha ha over a show that hasn't even premiered. Okay, so I doubt it will portray the experiences women endured at the real life Playboy Club in Chicago correctly; fictional accounts rarely accomplish that feat.
I doubt many slaves were ever as content on their owners' plantations as Mammy, Big Sam and Pork were on Tara in Gone With The Wind, but generations of movie lovers (this one included) have managed to adore that sudsy movie just the same. Not that I think The Playboy Club will be another GWTW (This is NBC we're talking about).
I think I am going to take a wait-and-see approach on The Playboy Club. What do you guys think? Will all the controversy help or hurt The Playboy Club? Sound off in the comments!

I would say there is "glamour" in the "tacky" ... just ask Dolly Parton!
I wouldn't expect historical accuracy from a soap, so all Steinem is actually doing is bringing free advertising to NBC. If "The Playboy Club" does turn out to be soapy goodness, then all the better.

I'm in the wait and see camp, too. It's a no-brainer that Steinem would have this attitude. In her perfect world, these sorts of places would never have existed, but in the real world, they did. I hope the show is a realistic portrayal of life in The Playboy Club, warts and all. These days, would viewers accept any less? I believe the unvarnished truth can be soapy-goodness, too. Even moreso, in fact.
Mad Men shows us what the world of advertising was really like. Before this, the only portrayal of that world was on Bewitched. I didn't expect Darren Stephens' world to be a realistic portrayl of Madison Avenue, but I certainly DO expect it from Don Draper's world. Gloria Steinem's problem is that she STILL sees sexism around every corner, but we've evolved a lot since then. (Of course, we wouldn't have evolved as much without GS, so I'm criticizing her with one side, and have much respect for her with the other.)

All this bru ha ha reminds me of the complaints that surfaced before "Swingtown" hit the air a few years back. Swingtown was eventually shelved until summer on CBS. Of course, all of the outrage about Swingtown was pretty much unjustified; it ended up being a terrific show and, incidentally, was very values-centered.

Damn Eddie Cibrian's hands......ruining a PERFECTLY good picture!!!
I will probably watch out of curiosity, but something tells me it's going to be tacky and glorified filth. And furthermore, I have no desire to see scantily clad females.

Can I just go on the record and say that I have a desire to see scantily clad females? I mean, if anyone's taking a poll...

@TVGord I like to everybody naked. Life's a buffet. Some like chicken, some like beef, some like fish and some of us like it all!

TV Gord,
If I could, I would send them all over to your house gift wrapped. But I am sure Hugh Hefner has them pretty spoiled, so I hope you can keep up!!

Aww, thanks, alstonboy! Let's start with Chrishell Stauss. I hope the producers of The Playboy Club know she's looking for work (AND she can ACT)! I sure as heck hope I can keep up with Hugh Hefner, incidentally!
And Jamey, do you really want to see EVERYONE naked? Let's consider Hugh Hefner. I don't think even HE wants to see his wrinkly own ass!
I also highly doubt you'd want to see me naked, but since you're into buffets, I would be honored to provide a smorgasGord!
