Mad Men and Modern Family Lead 2011 Emmy Nominations

The Primetime Emmy nominations were announced on July 14 and both broadcast and cable series had something to smile about.  It’s no surprise AMC’s Mad Men earned a Best Drama nomination, plus 18 more for a leading 19 nominations. HBO’s Boardwalk Empire was close behind with 18 nominations, including Outstanding Drama, but will be competing against fellow HBO series Game of Thrones for the big award.

ABC’s Modern Family scored the most comedy nominations, with 17. Fox’s Glee picked up nominations in the Outstanding Comedy, Supporting Actress and Supporting Actor categories.  The Big Bang Theory, The Office, Parks & Recreation and 30 Rock joined Modern Family and Glee as the nominees in the Outstanding Comedy category.

On the drama side, Friday Night Lights earned a much deserved Best Drama nomination. It also took home nominations for Kyle Chandler and Connie Britton in the Lead Actor and Actress categories. The critically acclaimed CBS legal drama The Good Wife didn’t need an injunction to get nominations for Outstanding Drama, Lead Actress, two Supporting Actor nominations and two Supporting Actress nominations. Timothy Olyphant, Walton Goggins and the brilliant Margo Martindale earned nominations for FX’s Justified in the Lead Actor, Supporting Actor and Supporting Actress categories, respectively. Peter Dinklage earned Game of Thrones its only acting nomination in the Supporting Actor category, for his portrayal of Tyrion Lannister. Showtime’s Dexter joined Boardwalk Empire, Friday Night Lights, Game of Thrones, The Good Wife and Mad Men with a Best Drama nominations.

What do you think of this year's Emmy nominations? Is there any series or actor who you think was snubbed of a nomination. AMC's The Walking Dead could make a strong argument for being robbed of an Outstanding Drama nomination. See the full list after the jump!

Looking at this list, it is so clear that broadcast networks are NOT producing Emmy-quality any more (except maybe in the sitcom area). When will they wise up and learn that the corporate meddling and censorship will prevent them from achieving the quality of cable?

Wow, I'm not familiar with most of these shows.

I really need check out Game of Thrones.

Cat Deeley, So You Think You Can Dance

Much deserved nomination. Probst will probably win, though, since he's won it every year so far.

Here is the text of an email I sent to an off-topic e-group of a soap e-group:

"I have learned that one of my favorite reality competition shows, "So You Think You Can Dance" garnered 8 Emmy nominations including Outstanding Reality Competition, Outstanding Reality Competition Host (Cat Deeley...........about darn time), and of course, several choreographers, including Season 2 winner, Travis Wall who received an Emmy nom this morning for several of his routines, including the Statue Routine that Melanie and Marko did to open the live version of this year's SYTYCD! Nigel Lithgow was dead on when he said that he thought we'd just seen the first Emmy nominated routine. I'm am so damn proud of Travis for his hard work! Also nominated, Mia Michaels, Sonya Tayea (sp?), and several others. They were also nominated for the Season 7 Finale (Part 2) for lighting design.

As for last night's show, the awesome duo of Melanie and Marko continued to mesmerize me with their routines, even those that are well out of their comfort zones. Their last contemporary routine had me in tears! I made a bold prediction at the beginning of this season and that was that Marko would be in the Final 2. I'm now going to boldly predict that it will be a Marko/Melanie finale! None of the other dancers stand a chance against these two unless of course they completely implode, which I highly doubt they will. This is by far the best group of dancers that the judges came up with this year. It's going to be difficult to top this year with whatever they come up with next year.

Any thoughts?"

I’m so very happy for the Best Drama Series nomination for GAME OF THRONES. I wish it had scored more acting nominations but if only one person needed to be nominated from the series, it had to be Peter Dinklage for his superb portrayal of Tyrion Lannister. He never wastes a scene.

I’m always happy for nominations for FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS and MODERN FAMILY, the only sitcom on television I give a damn about. In my opinion, Connie Britton is the best actress on television right now, and has been since FNL’s premier and her work this season has been even more stellar. I’m rooting for her but I wouldn’t mind an upset by Julianna Margulies for her work in THE GOOD WIFE. I’ve been catching up on the first season via Netflix. I was already in love with Archie Punjabi from the few episodes I’ve seen this season but Julianna’s portrayal of Alicia Florrick has really, really grown on me.

I LOVE CAT DEELEY from SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE! She is the BEST reality television host on television. I can’t stand the oh so arrogant Jeff Probst from SURVIVOR and I really hope the Emmy voters don’t hand him another award.
