Tina Fey Responds to Tracy Morgan's Anti-Gay Rant

Tracy Morgan recently drew a lot of ire from the LGBT community when he "joked" during a comedy stint in Tennessee that he would stab his son if he turned out to be an effeminate gay man. Since then, Morgan has apologized for the rant:

“I want to apologize to my fans and the gay and lesbian community for my choice of words at my recent stand-up act in Nashville. I’m not a hateful person and don’t condone any kind of violence against others,” Morgan said. “While I am an equal opportunity jokester, and my friends know what is in my heart, even in a comedy club this clearly went too far and was not funny in any context.”

Now his 30 Rock co-star and boss, Tina Fey, has responded publicly to the issue. TV Line has the full story and you can read Fey's statement after the jump.

“Stand-up comics may have the right to “work out” their material in its ugliest and rawest form in front of an audience, but the violent imagery of Tracy’s rant was disturbing to me at a time when homophobic hate crimes continue to be a life-threatening issue for the GLBT Community. It also doesn’t line up with the Tracy Morgan I know, who is not a hateful man and is generally much too sleepy and self-centered to ever hurt another person. I hope for his sake that Tracy’s apology will be accepted as sincere by his gay and lesbian coworkers at 30 Rock, without whom Tracy would not have lines to say, clothes to wear, sets to stand on, scene partners to act with, or a printed-out paycheck from accounting to put in his pocket. The other producers and I pride ourselves on 30 Rock being a diverse, safe, and fair workplace.”

it's almost too provocative to even comment upon - however I am interested by the consumption of this type of scandal.

first it leaks on social media, then it is discussed cable tv, then polls are taken by network shows, then celebrities take sides, some other celeb makes an insensitive remark in response on twitter, the main celebrity apologizes and we move on

what interested me the most was the story that the guy who leaked it had to come out to his family prior to appearing on CNN - so he was brave enough to start a national debate and it he caused him to be brave enough to live an open life -

so, skip the apology Mr. Morgan, because your tasteless attempts at humor did actually have a positive impact on someone's life
