Liam McIntyre Wins Spartacus Role

After months of speculation Starz has finally chosen its new Spartacus. The premium cable channel announced January 17 that Aussie actor Liam McIntyre will take over the role in Spartacus: Blood and Sand. The search for Starz’s new Spartacus, vacated by Andy Whitfield when he needed further treatment for cancer, has elicited widespread coverage and as recently as January 13 Prison Break’s Dominic Purcell had been mentioned as a possible contender. Starz had this to say about McIntyre.

“Since no one can really replace Andy, we realized that we should instead find an actor who can truly lead ‘Spartacus’ forward,” Albrecht notes. “It was important to us to have Andy endorse the idea of recasting this part, which he did in the same heroic manner that he’s dealt with his whole ordeal. And that, coupled with our fortune in finding a young actor with the gladiator credentials and the acting ability of Liam, makes it easier for us to keep this hit franchise going.”
