Thursday’s Triple Threat: Grey’s Anatomy, Private Practice and The Vampire Diaries

I don’t know about you, but on Thursday nights my two DVRs get a workout like you wouldn’t believe. Three of the series at the top of my DVR list–so they don’t get over ridden by other shows–are ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy and Private Practice and The CW’s The Vampire Diaries. Watch promos from all three shows after jump!

Grey’s Anatomy: This season has been all about the doctors at Seattle Grace battling the ghosts left over from the horrific massacre in last season’s finale. While each deals with it in their own way, it is Cristina (Sandra Oh) who appears to be the most traumatized, so much so that in the final moments of last week’s episode we found out that she’d left the program at Seattle Grace. Tonight, in “Something’s Gotta Give”, the other doctors find out.

Private Practice: Last season Pop Confidential’s Regan and I agreed that Private Practice had become a better series than Grey’s Anatomy. That statement is even truer this season. The shocking rape of Charlotte (KaDee Strickland) and its impact on the doctors at Oceanside Wellness boosted Private Practice’s ratings by 44% and should put Strickland in the running for an Emmy nomination. This week the fallout continues as Addison (Kate Walsh) struggles to keep Charlotte’s secret and the rest of Oceanside Wellness deals with the demons Charlotte’s attack have stirred up. If you haven’t been watching Private Practice it is beyond time to tune back in.

The Vampire Diaries: The Vampire Diaries, Modern Family and The Good Wife are my trifecta of can’t miss, must watch first when I get home, don’t you dare spoil them for me on Twitter shows. The introduction of The Vampire Diaries' newest blood thirsty badass villain Elijah (Daniel Gillies), who isn’t quite as dead as Elena (Nina Dobrev), Stefan (Paul Wesley) and Damon (Ian Somerhalder) think he is, only solidified by belief in The Vampire Diaries. It excels at introducing consecutively more dangerous villains, along with said villains minions, intensifying the stakes (all puns intended). If that isn’t enough to get you to tune in, maybe budding relationship between Bonnie (Katerina Graham) and Jeremy (Steven McQueen) will. This is episode also features The Young and the Restless’ Bryton James.

Try watching Bones, Fringe, Grey's Anatomy, Private Practice, Nikita, The Vampire Diaries and The Big Bang Theory and making sure that none of them cancel the others out...LOL Thank God NBC doesn't have good comedies like Friends, Fraiser or Will & Grace on Thursdays any more or I'd be screwed. The fact NBC doesn't have anything I watch is the only thing that makes it possible to not need a third DVR.

You broke my heart, Fredo. I know I am in the minority, as the ratings reflect, but I think many of NBC's current Thursday night comedies are equal to or in some cases superior than their most popular comedies of the past.

Also, I've heard nothing but good things about The Vampire Dairies but I've declared myself too old to watch. Ten, even five, years ago I probably would have been obsessed with this show. I should have been committed during the years Buffy and Angel were on.

Luke, you were doing so well with the your love of the trifecta of TVD, MF, and TGW; but, you had to go and say there was no good Thursday night shows on NBC. I like 30 Rock, but I can see how some might now like or get; The Office is still amazing; and Community is second only to MF in being the funniest show on tv. I don't care about anything on abc, fox, or cbs on Thursday, but those comedies and TVD make it my favorite night. Also Its Always Sunny in Philadelphia is awesome, but like 30 Rock, I can see where it might not be everyones cup of tea.

The Vampire Diaries is the best show on tv. It is amazing week after week. Last week's ending with Damon and Elena (and the single tear down Ian Somerhalder's face) nearly ripped my heart out of my chest! I think if ever there was a CW/WB/UPN actor/actress worthy of an Emmy nomination and win despite the stigma of those channels, it is Ian. Also, Nina Dobrev shows why daytime actors are always richly rewarded for playing double roles. She completely encompasses two completely different characters. But beyond them, the acting and writing cast of that show is just phenomenal.

@season - You are not too old! You need to watch Vampire Diaries.

@ghaddict and cookooclock - Burn Notice is AWESOME, but it drives me nuts that USA put it on Thursdays, because the moment I have to start worrying about the cable shows during the week things get even more complicated and it is just cruel and unusual punishment for them to put it on Thursdays.

@watchingallday - I didn't say there were no good comedys on NBC, I said none of them were as good as Frienda, Fraiser and WIll & Grace, which for me, none of them are. You have no idea how badly it hurts to not be able to watch NBC for anything other than Chuck. It used to be my network! As for It's Always Sunny...I loved that show and watched it untili they introduced DD. After that it was never the same and I lost interest.

Thursday is tough on my DVR too. I thought Grey's Anatomy was boring last night, whereas Private Practice continued it's run of great episodes this season. Grey's has been better this year, but last night was not a good eample. And then the promo shows Callie hooking up with Mark again! I will hate it if that happens!

Nobody watches The Mentalist? I know it's a cop show, but it's the best show on Thurs., IMO.

I see promo's for Grey's and Private Practice but all I see is a really bad parody of a soap opera with people dressed in scrubs. lol

I have the same problem but my DVR shows are BONES, FRINGE, THE VAMPIRE DIARIES and NIKITA. I then catch up with THE BIG BANG THEORY, THE OFFICE, COMMUNITY, OUTSOURCED and 30 ROCK online the day after.
These TV execs really need to spread some of the goodness around because Thursdays are going to be the death of me.
