Check Out Kairon John in Tequila Sunrise; PLUS GLO-TV Launches With a Whole Slate of Diverse Primetime Soaps!

If you haven't heard the name Kairon John before, you might want to remember it. Something tells me you'll be hearing it for quite some time. I caught up with John, who has appeared in such series as Noah's Arc and The DL Chronicles, as well as the movies Transformers 2 and The Ski Trip 2: Friends & Lovers, the last weekend of August at a showing of the short film Tequila Sunrise, in which he stars. The screening was held at the funky, artsy Eyedrum Art and Music Gallery as part of the annual Underground Atlanta Film Festival .
In Tequila Sunrise, John portrays Anthony, a disenchanted truck driver who married too young and now finds himself a father of two and a husband, when he really doesn't know who he is. When Anthony meets Valencia (Tiffany Black), a jilted sistah looking for a good time at a bar in Albuquerque, he temporarily forgets the life—and the wife, Abigail (Jillian Rea)—waiting for him back at home.
I was impressed by the soulful, earnest peformance John offers up in Tequila Sunrise. As you will see when you watch the clip below, you can literally feel Anthony's palpable, tragic, lethargy for the life he finds himself unable to escape. Black provides a burst of in-your-face energy as the wild Valencia, and Rea shows a mxiture of volatile emotions as a young, very desperate housewife with a sick child.
During a Q&A session following the screening, one of the producers of Tequila Sunrise, Rashad Mubarak, revealed the amazing piece—complete with top notch production values—was produced for under $5,000! Maybe Tequila Sunrise's talented writer/director Lamont Pierre can hold a "How-To" session for daytime soap producers?
Also, for fans who have been crying out for more diverse, soapy projects, John tells me a television version of Friends & Lovers from Maurice Jamal will begin filming in ATL soon for GLO-TV. Check out Tequila Sunrise after the jump!

Podcastjunkie I was floored by how well they made their short look for under $5,000. It just goes to show it can be done. Even with series like GL and ATWT, if they had to go to cheaper production models, why did it have to look so awful and unprofessional. If daytime had new blood like this running it, the shows could become more cost effective and story wouldn't have ot be lacking.

While this reads direct to DVD, I do agree that the production values are strong for the price. This and the oversea soaps are what these ppl in Daytime should be studying. But that would mean that thy actually care about still having their jobs. Honestly, one would think all of these soaps getting cancel sooner rather than latter would kick the ppl butts in gear to look for ways to save their jobs. O to the well.
