Whoopi Backpedals on Defending Mel Gibson: "I Didn't Stick up For Him"

Just when the Mel Gibson tape saga was beginning to fade a wee bit, it’s back! In an interview with the UK’s Metro London Goldberg denies defending Gibson on The View after Radar Online released tapes of him berating his then girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva.
You’ve stuck up for Mel Gibson recently. Why was that?
I didn’t actually. All I said was that in my opinion Mel Gibson isn’t a racist. That isn’t sticking up for someone. I know him, I’ve spent time with him, my family have spent time with him – I’d have noticed if he was racist. On slow news days people hear what they want to hear. I didn’t stick up for him but I said I’ve met real racists and he isn’t one of them. He’s a bonehead.Did you get any criticism for it?
Sure, from bloggers who don’t have anything else to do but reinterpret what they think they heard and comment on a clip from YouTube rather than listen to what I said in its entirety. My response is: ‘Kiss my behind; if you want to discuss what I’ve actually said then cool but I’m not responding to stupid BS’. The angering part about bloggers is that they’re anonymous. They’re chickens. I say what I’ve got to say and keep on rolling.

She actually didn't defend him for his rants. All she said was that he wasn't a racist. I agree that people took what she said and ran with it, but what's new?

Whoopi has been out of touch since she stood next to Ted Danson in blackface and thought that mess was funny.

What she actually said was " I have spent time with Mr Gibson and my family and he didn't appear to be racist." I think it's a fair statement based on HER experience with him. I would be willing to bet that the folks he upset and talked about would rightfully beg to differ.

What ever Whoopi says I believe..... But I was listening that day, and she said he was a friend and knows he is NOT a racist!
Mel has a problem and it needs to be addressed, but I am sure in his heart he is not a racist. That would mean he is not a Christian.
But of course there are those that don't think being racist is a sin!! God help them!

But Jamey, They were dating then. She was just making a point. If Whoopie is a racist, then I am 16, 36-22-34!

The fact that they were dating made it worse. She as a black woman knows how demeaning and demoralizing black face was to African Americans, and to sit there and giggle and sniggle alongside that was madness. Now she is saying she knows someone is "not a racist:" when he told his girlfriend she deserved to be raped by a derogatory word used to describe her people, because of how provocatively she was dressed.
How can she, with a straight face, say she "knows he isn't racist" after that? He used a horrendous slur and a tired stereotype—the one that all black men are sexual beasts just itching to harm white women—all at the same time. Why would she defend that? It's unconscionable. JMO

By saying he's not a raxist isn't she defending him? I don't mean to say she's dfending his comments, I'm sure she doesn't agree with them but by, saying that he's not a racist isn't she denfending *him?*
