The Maniac's Weekly Picks and Pans: Bruno and I Love You Beth Cooper
By Craig Peters on July 08, 2009

Whatever you think of incredible nut job Sacha Baron Cohen, his penchant for insane comedy is already legendary. Now comes Cohen's latest film: Bruno, the story of a flamboyant gay with no grasp of right or wrong or no idea of a social contract. Bruno will be obnoxious, disgusting and probably hilariously funny, if Cohen's past work is any indicator. Bruno trades for a small African child, goes to Sears and dons an all Velcro suit, all with expected consequences particularly when confronting seemingly "normal" people. I would not take my grandmother, mother or even my Aunt Jean, who can accept almost anything, to this film; Borat, Cohen's first film was so over the top that even I was disgusted, while laughing my absolute ass off of course.
A teen romantic comedy for the new century, I Love You Beth Cooper adds much of what we loved from the great romantic comedies pg the last century (geek finds love with a popular hottie, male or female) with the sensibility (read: sexual content) of the new century: think Molly Ringwald meets Jonah Hill. The film looks to be over the top, rather too much perhaps for the fuzzy bunnies set from the 80s, but plenty tame for the 2000s. Go at your own risk, I will see this one so you might want to wait, I have yet to weenie out on a film, no matter how bad it is and this will not be my first.
